UPDATES
New entries and additions or content corrections for existing entries will appear as I create them or as boaters send in their ideas. Watch this page!
Correction to photo captions p. 19 and 144: delete last sentence in caption. Bloodhound has lifelines, which were installed after this photo was taken.
Correction to photo caption p. 228: first sentence of the caption should read: "A lugger-rigged cutter ketch (a former fishing vessel) overtakes a small sloop."
New entry for p. 241: lifejacket accessories - some lifejackets are sold with one or two safety items or have pockets and/or D-rings to attach accessories you purchase. Recommended items include: (1) a bright personal strobe light; (2) a good whistle that works when it's wet (the whistles and strobes typically supplied with lifejackets usually aren't very effective); (3) a sharp, easily-opened SAFETY/RESCUE knife; (4) a small laser FLARE. Depending on where and how you operate, you may also consider having a PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACON and/or a small, waterproof handheld VHF/DSC radio attached to lifejackets that are worn by active crew members on deck.
Addition to local knowledge (p.249) - In addition to advice from cruising guides, harbormasters and local boaters, the websites and print and electronic publications of various boating organizations and the websites/blogs of individual boaters have valuable details and updates unavailable elsewhere. That's just one reason to join one or more of these organizations, to have access to useful "members only" information. You can also find the addresses of websites/blogs maintained by individual boaters appended to articles they write in boating magazines and by using an Internet search engine.
Correction to right of way priority (p. 335) - under Rule 18 of the NAVIGATION RULES certain vessels have right of way over other vessels when not in conflict with special rules for channels, traffic lanes, or when overtaking. Rule 3 defines the types of vessels. It's essential to memorize the priority. . . .
New entry for p. 115. cove stripe, sheer stripe: A cove stripe or sheer stripe is a narrow, decorative paint or gel coat stripe applied on the hull from bow to stern along the sheer, near the deck level. A true cove stripe has a recess in the hull material (the cove) into which paint or gold leaf is applied.
The cove stripe at the bow. The cove stripe at the stern.
